Three States, One Message: Citizens Are Taking the Fight for Kids Straight to the Ballot
When legislatures stall, dodge, or pretend not to notice what voters are clearly saying, citizens still have one tool left: the ballot initiative. And in Colorado, Missouri, and Maine, people are using it. Not party bosses. Not think tanks parachuting in from D.C. Parents. Community leaders. Volunteers with clipboards.
Colorado: Three Measures, One Big Statement
Protect Kids Colorado gathered enough signatures for three ballot initiatives:
Initiative 108: Child sex trafficking punishable by life in prison without parole
Initiative 109: Bars transgender-identifying children from sports not aligning with biological sex
Initiative 110: Bans surgery on children to alter biological sex characteristics; blocks state/federal funds, Medicaid, or insurance for minor sex changes
Director Erin Lee: "We're empowering everyday Coloradans to take action, protect children, and restore common-sense policies through the citizen-led lawmaking process."
Missouri: The Numbers Speak
67% oppose gender transition medications for minors
73% oppose gender transition surgeries for minors
Seventy-three percent opposition is not a fringe position. That is a landslide.
Maine: 71,000 Signatures
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows confirmed an initiative on transgender sports and bathroom access received enough signatures. Over 71,000 collected by citizens. The initiative will go before lawmakers and likely be sent directly to voters.
Citizens forcing the system to answer a basic question: are we going to protect children or not? That question is now headed to the ballot. Good.
